classical typography

Typography is composition and definition of space. Readability and promoting the contextual message of a work often takes top priority. But interpreting readability in terms of recognizing letters/words and their correlation of a particular language, would be an unessential limitation. Readability and direction of an interpretation of a work and his message-intention are regulated by the cultural context, even as the creator of typography himself.

The knowledge of the intention of classical typography [for example readability, awareness of font-families and -groups and the applied merging of them] is an essential base for experimentation and for designing and defining space. Thanks to the movements like DaDa in the 1910s/1920s or as well the sub-culture of Punk we experienced a break with the traditional understanding of typography under the conservative knout of readability like letter-recognition-orientation.
